Why Adult Friendships Can Feel More Difficult

During the conversation, Robin explained that friendship often felt more natural when we were younger.

“As kids we judged less and we connected more deeply,” Robin shared.

As adults, busy schedules, major life changes, digital habits, and fewer natural gathering places can make building new relationships more challenging.

People may spend less time together in offices, community spaces, malls, schools, and other environments where relationships once developed organically.

Social Media and Emotional Connection

At the same time, phones, social media, and digital communication make it possible to stay in contact with people almost constantly.

But being connected online does not always mean feeling emotionally connected.

“Connection and loneliness aren’t the same thing,” Robin explained.

She highlighted the importance of face-to-face interaction in creating emotional bonds.

Someone may text friends, follow their lives on social media, and interact with people throughout the day while still experiencing loneliness if those interactions are missing deeper emotional connection.

Building Meaningful Friendships in Adulthood

Robin’s conversation on ABC News Live offers an important reminder: meaningful relationships require more than access to one another.

Creating opportunities to spend time together, connect face-to-face, and build genuine emotional bonds may be an important part of addressing loneliness and developing stronger friendships in adulthood.
